MoFA Spokesperson: Israel's rejection of Gaza peace plan delays ceasefire deal

DOHA: Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, said Israel’s rejection of the proposed peace plan for the Gaza Strip represents a continuation of delays in implementing agreements reached to establish a ceasefire.

Qatar Calls for International Pressure

Dr. Al Ansari said Qatar hopes the international community will exert pressure to help ensure the implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.

Speaking during the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ weekly press briefing, he said a recent declaration by Hamas had contributed to a breakthrough in the agreement and stressed that responsibility now rests with the Israeli side to fulfil its obligations.

Qatar continues to work with international partners to support the transition to the second phase of the ceasefire based on the plan announced by the US President.

Qatar Continues Mediation Efforts

Dr. Al Ansari said Qatar is continuing its mediation efforts in coordination with the United States, Egypt and Türkiye.

He noted that the situation on the ground in Gaza and the West Bank remains highly concerning, with continued attacks affecting schools, hospitals, homes and civilian institutions.

He called for a clear international position toward these developments and said Qatar is working with regional partners to develop an appropriate response to the continued Israeli actions.

Qatar Supports Joint Efforts Over Gaza Violations

Regarding a joint statement addressing Israeli violations in Gaza, Dr. Al Ansari said Qatar supports measures taken by friendly countries, whether individually or collectively.

He referred to a statement issued by the foreign ministers of Qatar, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, adding that practical steps are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Qatar Welcomes Oman’s De-escalation Efforts

Addressing the visit of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman to Qatar, Dr. Al Ansari said the region is at an important stage in negotiations between the United States and Iran.

He praised Oman’s diplomatic efforts and reaffirmed Qatar’s support for initiatives aimed at reducing tensions.

Qatar, he said, is actively engaged in efforts to de-escalate tensions and continues to follow developments in the talks between Oman and Iran.

Freedom of Navigation Through Strait of Hormuz a Priority

Dr. Al Ansari said the immediate priority is the restoration of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law.

He stressed that delays in reaching an agreement do not serve regional stability and said Qatar is working through its mediation role to support the reopening of the Strait.

Qatar also supports regional understandings that protect the security of the Strait and ensure freedom of maritime navigation.

Qatar Welcomes Makkah Joint Defense Agreement

Regarding the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, Dr. Al Ansari welcomed regional cooperation aimed at strengthening security and stability.

He highlighted Qatar’s strategic relations with the three countries and said Doha views positively defence frameworks based on cooperation and good-neighbour relations.

Regional Security as a Collective Responsibility

Dr. Al Ansari stressed that regional security is a collective responsibility requiring stronger bilateral and regional coordination.

He noted that Qatar participates in several regional platforms designed to promote cooperation and close coordination among countries.

Qatar Calls for Regional Consensus on Strait Arrangements

Commenting on Iranian remarks concerning the Strait of Hormuz, Dr. Al Ansari said the Gulf position is focused on restoring the situation at the Strait to what it was before the crisis.

He emphasised that ensuring safe maritime navigation remains the most important priority.

Qatar supports regional understandings that protect the security of the Strait and freedom of navigation in accordance with international law. Any future arrangements concerning the management of the Strait or related matters, he added, should be based on regional consensus and full respect for international law to safeguard regional security and stability.
